Constructing the future: career guidance for changing contexts

Posted: 20 January 2010

In a recent article published in the Institute of Career Guidance Biennial journal, Siobhan Neary and Jo Hutchinson from the International Centre for Guidance Studies at the University of Derby question the role of research in the career guidance sector and its contribution to professionalising practice.

The article presents primary evidence from current practitioners who have undertaken research either as part of their role or through CPD activities, and finds that the dominant view of research is in its role to professionalise practice. Siobhan and Jo conclude that the status of practitioner research needs to be enhanced and be fully integrated within the core of all professional practice within the guidance sector; and that research outcomes need to be shared and disseminated in ways that are tailored for practitioners and policy makers alike.
